Newmar Motorhomes, VIN Stickers and Importing

Newmar Motorhomes, VIN Stickers and Importing

Something that has been brought to our attention lately is being referred to at "VINGate".  If you haven't heard it goes something like this.  A canadian couple purchased a brand new Newmar motorhome for more than $1M and took it home to Canada.  They kept it for 3 years and decided to sell it.  They sold it to a dealer in the United States.  US Customs found issues at least 3 different times.  They actually let the motorhome in the country once and 10 days later requested the dealer bring it back from Arizona to Detroit where it passed through customs.  Customs is upset that there is no VIN number on the chassis and there are only VIN stickers in 3 locations inside the motorhome.  The RV has been confiscated by the Federal Government. So now the federal government is giving flack to the Manufacturer Newmar for doing the VIN numbers incorrectly.  We will monitor this one closely to see where it ends up going.  Here are a few videos that help explain the situation.

And here is a link on an article that really goes into depth on the story from The Autopian.  We will be following this one.
